Sorry to have to share this news from Bud:

QUOTE

Hi all,

I hope that you are all enjoying the tail end of the our odd summer and that you've been able to get out and give your kite a tug.

I am sorry to have to tell you that the 6th annual Camas Indoor Kite Festival is not going to happen. The many things that have to line up to pull it off are just not coming together. It had a good run at 5 years and even though Windless is older at 10 years, Camas has actually completed twice as many competitions at 20. Not a bad record at all. I want to thank all of you that have helped make this event the success that it was through the years, but especially my wife and daughters!

Take care,

Bud

Whidbey Island Kite Festival

September 24-25, 2011, Central Whidbey welcomes the Whidbey Island Kite Festival to the Camp Casey Conference Center, just south of Coupeville.

Set against the majestic backdrop of the Olympic Mountains and Puget Sound, the kite festival features impressive ground and air displays of color and imagination. Activities include kids' kitemaking, beginning sportkite lessons, and sportkite demonstrations.

The highlight of the weekend is the Whidbey Island Sport Kite Championships, one of the premier sportkite competitions in the Pacific Northwest. Individual, pairs, and team events are included. Competition takes place both Saturday and Sunday. The Whidbey Island Sport Kite Championships is an AKA-sanctioned (www.aka.kite.org) event.

The Whidbey Island Kite Festival is presented by the Whidbey Island Kite Festival Association and the Whidbey Island Kite Fliers (www.whidbeykiteclub.com). It's a wonderful, fun-filled outing for the entire family.

There will be two mass ascensions - one Saturday and one Sunday. The first 40 people to sign up and participate in each event will receive a special-issue event pin. A mass ascension is where everyone is invited to fly a kite of the specified style on the field at the same time. The style of kite for Saturday is either delta or cellular and Sunday is flat/bowed or sparless.

There will also be a teddy-bear drop each day at 1:00 for children under 10.

The Central Whidbey Lions Club will have a booth at the field with hot dogs and soda. Also, you may order field-delivered deli lunches in advance by using the registration form.

For more information, call Allen Taylor at (360) 678-9358, call Mel Vance at (360) 675-4768

Start by getting familiar with the area:

www.seasideor.com The official website of Seaside, Oregon – filled with news and information about Seaside and the surrounding area.
www.seasideconvention.com One of the tabs on the site is called Floor Plan, you can click this tab and see the two options available: upper level & lower level. For those of you interested in the convention center layout, this should give you all the information you need.
www.shiloinns.com The Shilo Inn Suites Hotel is located right on the beach, and has a “bird’s eye” view of the flying fields. Rates are $129 oceanfront, $99.00 partial ocean view and $79.00 city view. There is a 9% city tax in Seaside, but Oregon has no sales tax – at all! If you choose the Seaside Shilo East (about 10 blocks off the ocean), rates will be $74.00 per night; all lodging rates honored from October 8 – 17, 2010

When booking your Shilo Inn lodging reservations for the 2010 AKA Convention in Seaside, Oregon, please call 800-222-2244 or the hotel directly at 503-738-9571 and ask for the American Kitefliers group rate for October 2010. You cannot get the group rate over the internet.

Camping Options: Circle Creek Campground and RV Park; 503-738-6070, Buds Campground and Grocery; 503-738-6855 and Forest Lake Resorts, LLC; 503-738-0100.

Airports: Seaside is located closest to PDX, the airport in Portland, OR. Portland is an international airport and is served by all the major airlines. You may also fly into Sea-Tac, in Seattle, WA. Both airports are also served by a smaller airline; Seaport Airlines (www.seaportair.com). Seaport Airlines flies from both Seattle & Portland into Astoria, which is approximately 20 miles north of Seaside. We are working with our host hotel, Shilo Inns, to see about utilizing their Astoria shuttle for transportation to Seaside. We realize many of you will be renting cars in either Portland or Seattle, but for those of you who don’t want a rental car, the Seaport Airlines ticket from either major hub may be an attractive option. Please phone me if you are interested, 541-994-4252.

Make your plans today to attend the hottest kiting event of the year – AKA’s 33rd Annual Grand National Competition and Convention. The next issue of Kiting will have your convention registration form and complete details of the event. For those of you who love the ease and convenience of registering online, internet registration will open the same time as the registration form in Kiting is delivered.

Stay tuned to the AKA website for updated information as it becomes available.

Maggie Vohs
Convention Manager
