I hope that you are all enjoying the tail end of the our odd summer and that you've been able to get out and give your kite a tug.

I am sorry to have to tell you that the 6th annual Camas Indoor Kite Festival is not going to happen. The many things that have to line up to pull it off are just not coming together. It had a good run at 5 years and even though Windless is older at 10 years, Camas has actually completed twice as many competitions at 20. Not a bad record at all. I want to thank all of you that have helped make this event the success that it was through the years, but especially my wife and daughters!

As I write this article, there are only 236 days left until convention 2010; a little more than 9 months and it’s time to get the party started! Start by getting familiar with the area:

www.shiloinns.com The Shilo Inn Suites Hotel is located right on the beach, and has a “bird’s eye” view of the flying fields. Rates are $129 oceanfront, $99.00 partial ocean view and $79.00 city view. There is a 9% city tax in Seaside, but Oregon has no sales tax – at all! If you choose the Seaside Shilo East (about 10 blocks off the ocean), rates will be $74.00 per night; all lodging rates honored from October 8 – 17, 2010

When booking your Shilo Inn lodging reservations for the 2010 AKA Convention in Seaside, Oregon, please call 800-222-2244 or the hotel directly at 503-738-9571 and ask for the American Kitefliers group rate for October 2010. You cannot get the group rate over the internet.

Airports: Seaside is located closest to PDX, the airport in Portland, OR. Portland is an international airport and is served by all the major airlines. You may also fly into Sea-Tac, in Seattle, WA. Both airports are also served by a smaller airline; Seaport Airlines (www.seaportair.com). Seaport Airlines flies from both Seattle & Portland into Astoria, which is approximately 20 miles north of Seaside. We are working with our host hotel, Shilo Inns, to see about utilizing their Astoria shuttle for transportation to Seaside. We realize many of you will be renting cars in either Portland or Seattle, but for those of you who don’t want a rental car, the Seaport Airlines ticket from either major hub may be an attractive option. Make your plans today to attend the hottest kiting event of the year – AKA’s 33rd Annual Grand National Competition and Convention. The next issue of Kiting will have your convention registration form and complete details of the event. For those of you who love the ease and convenience of registering online, internet registration will open the same time as the registration form in Kiting is delivered.

The World Kite Museum has sponsored the One Sky, One World Kite Fly for peace practically since the Museum started. The major focus of this event is to fly kites all over the world for peace and understanding. Any kind of kites – hand made or store bought, single line or several lines, American or other places. And if you don’t have a kite, come anyway. We will help you make one.

Kite flying and making takes place on the beach from 10 am to 4 pm weather permitting. Drive down the Bolstad Beach Approach under the white arch announcing the World’s Longest Beach. One Sky, One World headquarters is at the new Beach Pavilion.

A Brassington Kite Train Workshop

Kitefliers from across the Northwest will be gathered at the D-River State Wayside for the 32nd annual Fall Kite Festival in Lincoln City, Oregon. A celebration of both professional and leisure kite fliers wih some of the most colorful big "show kites" in the world. The theme for the 2010 kite season is "Quad-Zilla!"

The featured fliers at the festival will demonstrate their flying skills throughout the weekend. Team Island Quad will be the center of attentiion with their Revolution quad-line kites. At the festival we will have a mega fly of quad-line kites. If you have always wanted to fly in a grid, this is your chance. We will also mic the lead kiteflier, Terry Wiggill, so the audience will have a chance to experience how the grid is worked. It should be a lot of fun to see all the kites in the sky at the same time. During our Summer Kite Festival we had a mega fly of 29 kites, let's see if we can make it larger!
